An ethical dilemma arises when there is no clear correct way to proceed. These situations are difficult because the practitioner must often choose the path of doing the least harm, which does not feel very comfortable. In these difficult cases, the practitioner must weigh the consequences of different approaches to the problem and look at ethical considerations. In this class we carefully define the nature of a dilemma and look at a framework to use to decide what to do when one arises. This material builds upon basic understanding of boundaries and ethics in social work practice and leans on the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics as a guide to action as part of an eight step process.

Learning Objectives:

  • Examine the nature of ethical dilemmas
  • Become familiar with a framework and process
  • Familiarize participants with options for resources
  • Practice steps for effective resolution
