Notes:
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) works by helping individuals to willingly accept their unwanted thoughts and feelings while actively committing to behaviors aligned with their core values. In this way, ACT takes a unique approach to our pain and doubt. Rather than struggling through force of will to change those things about ourselves we wish were different, or becoming lost in the fantasy of an idealized future self unburdened by our current problems, we are instead encouraged to take a more open stance toward our inner world, focusing our efforts on the things that matter the most to us.
In this workshop, we will explore the roots of human suffering, the mind prison we build for ourselves, and how we become entangled in nets of language. We will discuss how ACT approaches this issue through the framework of six core processes: Mindfulness, Values, Committed Action, Self as Context, Cognitive Defusion, and Acceptance. Using these tools, we seek to increase our clients' Psychological Flexibility, improving their ability to meet the challenges of recovery.
Course objectives:
- Understand and discuss the language-based cognitive processes that lead to suffering
- Define Creative Hopelessness
- Learn and practice the six Core Processes of ACT
- Learn and discuss Psychological Flexibility
- Practice mindful process-oriented interviewing
